  • Glycerin or glycerol is extracted from various vegetable oils and fats by hydrolysis.Glycerol was discovered in 1779 by the Swedish pharmacist and chemist Scheele. Its characteristic viscosity and sweet taste, served to baptize this substance.Glycerin comes from the Greek word glykys (sweet) and the word cera.

    Characteristic properties

Glycerin is colorless and inoding. With a relatively high density (about 1.25) it has a boiling point of 290 °C and a fusion point of 18 °C.The liquid glycerin is freezing-resistant, but can crystallize at low temperature. It is water-soluble in any proportion, and is dissolved in alcohol, but is insoluble in ether and many other organic solvents.

    Uses and Applications

Thanks to its strong hygroscopic properties (capacity to absorb humidity from the surrounding environment), it has a moisturizing effect.

It also stabilizes the barrier function by improving its elasticity.

It is often used in skin care products, such as creams and lotions for the hands, as well as in DIY soap preparation.

    It has a conservative effect.
