Chess produces an essential oil that has been studied extensively in French universities for its anti-infective power. It is unavoidable in the fight against pathogenic germs, although its regular use is limited due to its dermocausticity on sensitive or pure skin. This perennial, short-stemmed, leafy plant is found on hills and low limestone mountains.
